Being a "true" Indonesian, there are some true facts I have gathered on how majority of Indonesian really speaks in which can be derived that what we have studied at school are pretty much useless due to the facts that:
* Around 80% (estimated) of our oral communication is consisted of slank
It is no doubt that Indonesians are really creative in inventing new words which you won't be able find in Indonesian dictionary. If you happen to take Indonesian conversation class, don't expect that you are ready to speak to Indo. They will mostly laugh or at least hold their laugh if you speak in a formal way to them.
E.g.
"I am so tired and I want to sleep."
Indonesian formal way: "Saya capai sekali. Saya ingin tidur."
Indonesian slank: "Gua capek banget. Gua pengen bobok."
See what I mean. From the above sentences, it can be identified that Indonesian slank is 100% different from the formal way of speaking. This is just a measure of how "creative" we are. Whether this is good or bad, I have no comment.
*We use damn a lot of abbreviation in text message, facebook post, etc.
If you are non-Indo and thinking of stalking on Indo convos on facebook wall by copying and pasting the sentences on google translator or any other kind of translator, you will definitely have no luck. Besides using slanks, we use short forms in writing our messages too! How cool is that! 2 layers of security! =P
E.g.
"How are you? It's been a really long time since I the last time saw you. I miss you"
Indonesian formal way of speaking: "Apa kabar? Sudah lama sekali ya kita tidak bertemu. Saya kangen kamu."
Indonesian slank - oral: "Pa kabar loe? Udah lama banget ya kita ga ketemu. Gua kangen sama loe"
Indonesian slank - written: "Pa kbr loe? Udh lm bgt y kt ga ktm. Gw kgn am loe"
Overall, I just want to wish you good luck in learning Indonesian language! =P
